Sampled By Who?? Roy Ayers vs. E-Rule

I picked this tune for Roy Ayers' first outing in the sampled by series due to the sun peeking out today in whats been an erratic summer so far here in the UK. Hopefully the smooth soulful groove will entice it out a few more times. Anyway Roy Ayers is a bit of a legendary Jazz musician from LA who started young and went onto release numerous albums and soundtrack various movies. This came out in 1976 on the LP of the same name and I'm sure will be familiar...

Roy Ayers - Everybody Loves The Sunshine

Also hailing from LA E-Rule is an independant MC who came out the blue to drop this wicked cut back in '94 and never really was able to come back with anything as good afterwards. He had a few releases towards the end of the 90's but like i say they drifted in obscurity. So here's E-Rule debut which looks like it's gonna be his finest hour, enjoy.

Another busy weekend coming up...

Yesh!!

Lots of stuff going on this weekend for all those Newbury headz in the know (and those of you reading this too - as it's kinda telling you what you need to know.... erm?), music will be brightening all our lives this weekend and here's the insiders guide as to where to be and when...

Thursday 30th July - Critical State at the Pig n Paper

We're taking over the Pig and Paper this thursday night for a serious drum and bass rinse out. Music will be running from 8pm-2am and various badass DJ's an MC's will be smashing the place up, no doubt.

Friday 31st July - Shaolin Drunken Meanderings at the Canal Bar
I'll be taking control of the ones and twoz on Friday in the Canal Bar for a little cocktail of beats, with a base of hip hop, a hint of funk and maybe a dash of dance music to top it all off. 9pm -12am.

Saturday 1st August - Reggae, Hip Hop vs Jungle & Drum n Bass at The Bricklayers
When saturday comes we'll be back for our monthly bash at the Bricklayers. Combining reggae, hiphop an the inevitable Drum n Bass always counts for a wicked mix of styles throughout the night so make sure you don't sleep on this one. With the smoking area ably handled by the Thump crew expect something different for Newbury. 8pm - 2am - Drunks Promo's on the night and bring ID and all that gay shit yeh.

Sunday 2nd August - Drum n Bass at the Monument
So it's sunday you had your roast and watched the Eastenders omnibus, all you gotta do is drag your sorry ass from watching Countryfile and Songs Of Praise on BBC1 and shift yer ass down the Monument for 8pm (where you can find us each an every sunday night). This is a no holds barred Drum and Bass rinseout with adequete MC support from the crew - not for the faint hearted!!

Glade Festival 2009

Glade Festival was a good look once again this year, although the weather was not on our side this time round and I spent the frist couple of days with wet feet as I didn't bother fuckin with wellies, a strategy that I have since re-considered. Anyway saw some wicked DJ's / Acts like DJ Pinch who smashed the enormous Vapor stage on Friday night, The Countryside Alliance, Freestylers, Carl Craig and Limewax on Saturday and a bunch of people on sunday too.

Wicked weekend all round, massive shouts out to all Newbury crew I bumped into as well as the Rinse Out heads from Exeter who made it all happen (Big up Ben Layden!)...

Sweet assed weekend!

Some Banging New Tunes for Ya!

It's been a while since I've come across some dope new hip hop, but in the last few weeks there have been some serious tunes dropping.

First up let's see what Preemo has been up to recently, this is from the new Blaq Poet LP - The Blaqprint, and it's a banger, straight in your face I think Westwood might say. Anyway it's fucking bad - bow down to Premier's beats as he's still the undisputed king!

Blaq Poet - Rap Addiction

Next up is this Mos Def tune i've been playing on loop since i got it yesterday. The beats is dangerous and I can't stop listening to it. Also features Slick Rick which is a good look. As I only came across this yesterday I got no idea when its coming out or on what at the moment... Comment if you know....
Mos Def ft. Slick Rick - Auditorium

Now if you haven't heard of DJ JS-1 out the Rocksteady crew then go google that name and find some of his mixtapes. This guy is ridiculous on the ones and twos and has laid down some serious sets which are well worth checking out. This is taken from his new LP 'No Sell Out', he produced all the tracks and has a plethora of heavyweight mc's dropping bars for him. This cut features NY legends OC out of Diggin In The Crates and Pharoahe Monche. Heavy.
DJ JS-1 ft. O.C. & Pharoahe Monche - Ridiculous

And finally here's another producer who I been diggin for a couple of years now. I first caught wind of him when he dropped his Port Authority LP back in 2007, which had some dope assed tunes up on it. He's been working with an mc called Torae who I don't know much about, maybe he's Canadian like Mr Polo. Anyway check them out, they do good tings yah. This cut also features L'il Fame outta M.O.P. representing Brownsville and that guy with the ridiculouly deep voice is our man Rock who you may remember from the Boot Camp Clik an Heltah Skeltah.
Marco Polo & Torae ft. Rock & L'il Fame - Smoke
