Sorry to keep banging on about it but the date for the Election has now been set for 6th May 2010.

We have three real choices:

Labour for more of the same abuse we have been suffering for the last 13 years.

Conservative for some new and slightly different flavours of abuse.
Liberal Democrats who vow to clean up politics, and change Britian for the good.

In my humble opinion Labour have sold this country down the road since 1997. They have consistenly promised the earth, and then failed to deliver on every stage.
For Instance in 1999 Labour approved the spending of £170 Million pounds on new CCTV schemes, a study which was done in 2004 by analysts MDB estimated that the spend on CCTV installation and maintenance in the previous decade (1994 - 2004) at approximately £4-5 Billion not taking the 24 monitering of the images into account. Now this isn't so bad if they actually improved conviction rates and made the area safer for residents. However it pretty apparant from personal experience and a wealth of evidence that its not the case.
I have freinds who have been beaten up by bouncers outside Liquid nightclub after a night on the tiles, however when they have requested the CCTV footage - a perfectly legitimate request as you are entitled to a copy of anything your image is on, they have fobbed them off with excuses, ah the camera's weren't pointing that way or that incident wasn't recorded. All bullshit.
Basically goes to prove that once again the Labour government wasted a FUCKING truckload of our hard earned monies on a useless fucking system. We are the most watched country in the World by quite a margin, all down to Labour's ridiculous social policies.
With regard to crime prevention, when you allow for the fact that crimes have been categorized differently over the last 13 years to fiddle the statistics, It appears that in real terms the most violent crime has increased by 44%. What the fuck? So they spend BILLIONS on this CCTV system and the figures go up. Well it's pretty fucking obvious the 1984 state isn't going to work. Next question: How Many Ministers have 'interests' in the CCTV providing and maintenance companies??
Also think ID Cards, Digital Economy Bill (no more free WIFI) and its pretty obvious Labour don't want to court the people, they want to suck fuckin global corporation dick and they are happy to sell our liberty to get their lips round it.

Digital Economy Bill

Some of you may be aware, many probably are not, but the Digital Economy Bill is due for it's second reading in Parliament this afternoon. This piece of legislation is a prime example of everything that is wrong and rotten through British politics at the moment.
Firstly those conniving ~~cnuts~~ politicians have timed the reading in order to get the bill into the "wash up", a westminster process of backroom wheeling and dealing for bills that have run out of time to be properly debated in parliament, in order to get them to Royal assent (and therefore law). Ya Vol! Watch it UK, no democracy needed to pass laws up in this motherfucker!
Secondly, the entire thing is bollocks, Jack Skellington aka Purdy Peter Mandelson has basically gone round all the biggest media companies ~~selling off any freedoms or consumer rights we might have had to the highest~~ ~~bidder~~ trying to achieve fairness for all... Or has he....

Reducing online piracy and copyright theft

By far the most contentious part of the bill and the source of huge popular opposition. The DEB adds a clause to the Communications Act 2003 that says that ISPs must provide "copyright owners" (defined murkily in the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act's section 173 with details (though not identities) of copyright infringers. Quite possibly, anyone could claim to be a copyright owner.
As altered, the bill now allows for ISPs to be required to block access to sites that allow "substantial" infringement. One of Lord Mandelson's principal targets here – urged on by the BPI and Federation Against Copyright Theft and Federation Against Software Theft – is "cyberlocker" sites that let people store files, or move them between two people easily, which, lobbyists argue, allows widespread copyright infringement. The argument then becomes how you tell whether a cyberlocker is being used for substantial infringement. But as they don't publicise their contents (they are like safe deposit boxes for the web), how can it be determined whether they are substantially infringing?
One site that would immediately be trapped by this provision is Wikileaks – which exists solely to republish leaked, and hence copyrighted, work. Would a Trafigura-like company in the future use the DEB to shut off UK access to the site if something embarrassing appeared there?
The bill allows for the "temporary suspension" of internet connections for those deemed to have allowed multiple copyright infringement after warnings from their ISPs (who are required to maintain "copyright infringement reports" on users, anonymously). Hotels and businesses that offer free or paid-for Wi-Fi have expressed serious concerns that they would have to shut such services down.
The record industry is happy with the proposals, but many citizens aren't: in two days more than 10,000 people had contacted their MP via the 38 Degrees site to express concern and demand proper debate of the proposals.
A "proper" debate would take so long it would kill the bill – although Harriet Harman, the leader of the Commons, did suggest in a tweet that it will get "debate". The Tories, however, seem to be in favour.

I think it's really important we pick the right Government this time around as Labour seem to have decided to sell us down the river in the run up to their inevitable election defeat. After watching these three politicians for an hour on telly last night, I'm convinced Cable and the Lib Dems are the only way to go. Osborne was a too awkward, and lacked the balanced and considered views of Cable, instead trotting out party lines and insisting that Cameron agreed with his policies, all the while Darling kept calling him irresponsible.
Darling, as was pointed out by both Cable and Osbourne had his chance to make a difference during the last 13 years of Labour rule that ended in this mess, so he's out straight away. And between Osborne and Cable there was no competition, One seemed to be level headed, rational and firmly in control of the subject and the other one was George Osborne.

Vince Cable's closing message:

The Labour government led us into this mess. They have done severe damage to pensions and savings, they have wasted a vast amount of money on over-centralised public services.

The Tories presided over two big recessions in office, they wasted most of the North Sea oil revenue, they sold off the family silver on the cheap. Now they want to have another turn to get their noses in the trough and reward their rich backers.

The Liberal Democrats are different. We got this crisis basically right. We are not beholden to either the super rich or militant unions.

Think that says it all really.

Firstly they have just put up a new tune from their forthcoming LP 'Brothers'. This tune is the only Dangermouse production from that LP and it's a typical bluesy funk rock number check it either here or here.
The new LP is called Brothers and is due for UK release on May 18th 2010, looking foward to getting a bit of that!

Doom live at The Roundhouse 5th March 2010

Right then I went to The Roundhouse up in Camden last Friday night, which incidentally is a wicked venue. It's kinda like a concert hall but with the big screen and lighting system set up it reminded me more of the main tent at last years Glade festival, only nowhere near as loud. I didn't get there til late so missed all the support acts on beforehand, apparantly Ryoichi Kurokawa's live audio visual set was a treat and I kinda wanted to check out Kidkanevil too but it's my own fault for sitting around getting stoned all afternoon and not getting on the train sooner.
When I eventually rocked up, the bar was absoloutly packed and it was at least 20 minutes before, beer in hand, i began to investigate proceedings. There was no-one on stage at this point but some dodgy daft punk-esque electro house was playing, to pretty much everyone's confusion, and the lighting guy was fucking about with all his effects. Various theories were flying about as to what the hell was going on, I reckon it was either Doom tormenting us with some shit tunes to get that extra impact when he finally strode on or the soundguy badly misjudged the audience for the show. That went on for at least 40-45 minutes and eventually I got bored an nipped outside to the freezing balcony for a quick smoke, which by the law of sod meant the show was bound to start.
True to form soon as I stepped out the lights had gone down and things kicked off, he was into his second tune by the time i was back in the room and i'd missed comedy imposters and god knows what else. Don't you hate that? I didn't mind at all by this point, Doom was onstage, probably. Doom! It was wicked, people were definately up for it and getting lively. Doom was banging through a varied set list: All Caps, Antimatter, Ballskin, Curls, Fazers, Gazillion Ear plus a bunch of other tunes i've forgotten, touching on pretty much all of his projects in the last 5 years. I was loving every minute, been jabbering on about him to anyone who'll listen for years so this was some kind of zen shit for me.
Over on the BBC some guy is saying it wasn't Doom, well i'm not really sure what he's saying to be honest. The guy onstage knew all the words to the songs, he looked just like the guy in the obscure photo's on my record sleeves, the sound system wasn't crystal clear but he sounded pretty similiar too. I've never met him in the flesh though so I couldn't say for certain but the dude onstage seemed pretty Doom-ish.
Whether it was the real Doom or not, I still loved it, Doom's tunes could be performed by a tone def, grumpy, one armed siberian dwarf and i'd still be loving them, so perhaps I was always destined to enjoy this evening. Anyway if you didn't go you're clearly crackers, UK needs more Doom!!

The Times rumours BBC 6 Music to be axed.

Well according to the spineless hacks carrying out Murdoch's orders at The Times, the BBC plan to axe the online station BBC 6 Music as part of a drive to improve quality over quantity at the organization. There are several problems with this as far as I can see, which I will attempt to lay out for you here.
Firstly BBC 6 Music is currently the best internet radio station I am aware of, where else can you hear presenters as wide ranging as Jarvis Cocker, Craig Charles, Huey Morgan and Adam and Joe all in the same weekend?
Secondly the music they play isn't for all tastes, but it is definately justified and when compared to other BBC stations' the output is refreshingly different. To shut that off would effectively end its exposure as no commercial radio would dare be that bold for fear of losing ad revenue.

And thirdly and perhaps most importantly, this is a motivated purely by insatiable greed as David Bancroft writes:

"This article is originally from THE TIMES. It isn't true, it is Murdoch running up a flag to see who salutes. Internet news is the future, and the BBC is better at it than News Corp."

Murdoch has been out to get the BBC for a while now, obviously it riles him to have a publically financed company as the only real major competition for his own News Corp. In fact the BBC puts his pisspoor operation in the shade with it's transparency, value for money and general reporting. Murdoch's papers are sensationalist at best and just plain celebrity idolizing soft porn at worst yet this man is afforded more control over our media than any one person should have. And he then has the gall to press his boy to call for the breakup of the BBC.

R.A. The Rugged Man live in The Croft, Bristol - 24th February 2010

Last night I got a lift with Ed, Grant, Brady and Trenty to The Croft up in Bristol to see R.A. The Rugged Man doin an little live show. I hadn't been down The Croft before but it turned out to be a intimate little venue that served Doom Bar on the pump, so predictably I was loving it before the music even started.

The support acts weren't too bad, UK boys doin there little thing, think Trenty was diggin that Blacksmith
character but I didn't think much of any of them really. They all showed good energy but had simliar straightforward flows and standard boom bap beats and nothing made em stand out to me.

Then the Rugged Man took to the stage. Unfortunately he didn't have a DJ to back him up so was reduced to playing instrumentals and sometimes the tune itself off his laptop (plugged into the system obviously!). He knew the score though and was quick to skip to the next beat whilst abusing the girls in the audience or trying to incite a riot (see the 2nd video lol). Despite not having the necessary dj support he smashed it hard, and the crowd chimed in pretty much word for word which was crazy, so it ended up being a pretty wicked night all round. If you ever get the chance you should check this dude out, you will not be dissapointed!

So this is the second time i've bought this little gem from eBay now,
got a decent rate this time round too, think the first copy cost £15!
Even more annoying than that was the fact I only played it once (at the
'fundraiser for asia' night in the Monument a couple of years back)
before it mysteriously dissappeared from my record bag, never to be seen again!
Been hankering after it ever since so I was over the moon to find a
bargain copy last week and duly snapped the hellz up!

This is a prime tune, always gets the crowd moving no matter where you're playing!
Got some more treats due in the next few days - Feb 2010 has been a good month

Wu Tang Clan vs. The Beatles

Now this isn't a new concept, if you cast your brains back to 2004
you'll surely recall the hype that surrounded Dangermouses' project
which combined the Jay Z accapella's from The Black Album and a
series of samples from The White Album by The Beatles to create
The Grey Album. This was higly acclaimed at the time and has since become
a kind of cult collectors item, and I've seen them go for mundo mundo bucks on ebay!

Must admit I wasn't really feeling that, it was no doubt a good notion but
I like my hip hop with a bit more FUNK than Dangermouse managed to
wring from his sample base. And since he's done that we've had Jaydiohead
Sinatra vs. Biggie, Hendrix vs. Biggie and God knows how many others I
haven't even noticed spamming up the internets.

Anyway so being a Wu Connaisseur I kind of felt like I had to download this one
just in case it wasn't totally shit. Not listened yet and I'm a bit anxious to be honest...

8 Diagrams is the fifth studio album by New York hip hop group Wu-Tang Clan, released through Street Records Corporation on December 11, 2007.

8 Diagrams featured all nine current members, with previously recorded material from Ol' Dirty Bastard, as well as a tribute track titled "Life Changes." Auxiliary members Cappadonna and Streetlife also appear.
In an article from Nme.com, it was stated that the album would feature production from Easy Mo Bee, Marley Marl, Q-Tip, DJ Scratch and Nile Rodgers.^[6] George Clinton, of P-Funk; Dhani Harrison; John Frusciante; and Shavo Odadjian, bassist of System of a Down are also on the album as well.^[7]
This is the Wu's first collaboration since the passing of original member Ol' Dirty Bastard, who died in 2004. "We still miss him every day," GZA added. "It's like you lost an arm or a leg; you feel incomplete. You can still walk or do other things, but you're limited to a certain degree." With the RZA adding, "He was a very special person, like a very rare diamond. You know, it's like you wake up one day and they're saying, 'There are no diamonds in the world anymore, just cubic zirconia...'"^{[citation needed]}

So my lovely older Sister got me a Freitag bag for Christmas this year!

These are really good, they are handmade from Truck Tarps, Seatbelts and Old inner Tubes, so they are really eco-freindly i suspect. Made by Swiss company called Freitag they have been around for about 15 years now, click here for a quick guide on how they are made.

And just for the record Man Bags are useful for many things. It seems some young ladies thought the idea of men with bags to be quite funny when it popped up in converstaion in the pub last night. This is no laughing matter at all, Man bags provide real men with some serious benefits. For instance it opens the possibilities of taking your lunch to work or carrying records about. Even transporting important tools between jobs and keeping your MP3 player safe, so its no joke. Right then!

An essential figure for those with a taste for underground hip-hop on an outlandish tip, he always hides behind a Doctor Doom style villain's mask. His creation of his own universe based on old superhero comics and the mythology of Japanese monsters has given him a legendary aura and won over all types of fans. Among these are names that are more closely linked to rock: Thom Yorke, the main man in Radiohead, has remixed his track "GAZZILLION EAR" as a sign of his devotion to the masked superhero of rap. Sampled by Who?? Hall & Oates vs De La Soul

So we're back to checking the sampling treats offered up by the music gods from back in the day. We got some Rock and Soul this time around starting off with this little ditty here. Daryl Hall and John Oates had a string of hits in the late seventies and early eighties before fading into obscurity in the nineties. They dropped this tune in 1981 and it has been sampled extensively since by people like 2 Live Crew, King Geedorah, Heavy D and in this example De La Soul. On a side note apparantly MJ once admitted to Daryl Hall that Billie Jean copied elements of this tune, Karma's a bitch huh!

Hall & Oates - I Can't Go For That (No Can Do)

This tune here was where the horns in Say No Go are lifted from. It was on Sly Stone's first solo excursion 'High On You' which was released on Epic Records in 1975. I have to say I don't know much about Sly Stone, but he looks cool as fuck:

De La Soul need no introduction I'm sure.This was on the seminal LP 3 Feet High and Rising which dropped in 1989. Production credits go to Prince Paul (of Stetsasonic and Gravediggaz fame) who produced all the tunes on that LP i think. The 'ooooh' sound at 0.06 seconds in is lifted from the The Emotions - Best Of My Love see if you can identify it in there... Anyway wicked times, wicked tunes, get in.

Oh yes sireeee, we've secured a monthly Thursday night in the newly opened Avenue Nightclub in saddlers court, Newbury. We'll be presenting the finest selection of underground dance music our hand picked DJ's can muster, starting each event with a breakbeat aperitif quickly followed by a side order of dubstep then lashings of drum and bass to finish.

Sampled By Who?? David Porter vs Puffy & The Rza

Yes another week another sample, this time around i'm honoured to introduce a fantastic slice of music from the Stax Records label. Arranged and performed by David Porter, who alongside cohort Isaac Hayes, rose to prominence writing a shedload of songs for numerous Stax artists in the 60's and 70's. Originally released as a single in 1971 before it appeared on his LP "Victim Of The Joke? An Opera" also in '71, This tune has two main samples both of which involve a simple piano refrain that you will surely recognize, go on use your ears:

David Porter - I'm Afraid The Masquerade Is Over

In the Big Apple 23 years later on, a young man named Christopher Wallace and his producer / manager Sean Combs were in the process of recording one of the hottest hiphop LPs of all time, and lifted a piano hook from the tune above which created the basis of 'Who Shot Ya'. After it was released in '95 Tupac thought the song was a diss regarding his shooting in a recording studio in New York in November 1994, although both Biggie and Combs both went on record saying it wasn't as it had been recorded before the incident, nonetheless it is widely considered that Shakur recorded 'Hit 'Em Up' as an answer, although he did save a few choice words for Mobb Deep and freestyle genius Chino XL, who duly recorded 'Drop a Gem On 'Em' and 'Who Shot Ya?' respectivelly, sure i got that on wax somewhere... Anyway despite all the controversy this remains to be a catchy little beat and one of my favoutires from the 'Ready to Die' longplayer.

Notorious BIG - Who Shot You?

Now we're in New York (again) and Robert F. Diggs and his older cousin Gary Grice were plotting world domination with another 7 of their mates. In 1993 the group they were in went supernova and spawned various solo recording projects for the main protagonists. Grice under his moniker The Genius or the GZA dropped a jaw dropping album widely regarded as a milestone in hiphop 'Liquid Swordz'. The LP was entirely produced by Diggs aka Prince Rakeem or the RZA who at the time was cemeting his reputation as the creator of the rawest kung fu styled hiphop beats. It was the first Wu solo LP I purcahsed and still remember ordering my CD copy from Our Price week before it came out - the internet didn't exist in those days and if you wanted tunes, you had to hope Our Price stocked it, order it in yourself, or go to a big store Reading or London to cop that shit. After going down there after 6th form everday for two weeks they finally they had it, having been weened on hiphop with the likes of Cypress Hill, NWA, ONYX and Tupac and it flipped my mind. I was blown away by the intense rawness of the soundscape and masterful rhyming laid down by the RZA, GZA and co. Tracks like Shadowboxing, Liquid Swords and 4th Chamber changed my life! This track is not my favourite of the album, to many heavy tunes on there, however it's still a bad tune which also samples a fantastic film: Shogun Assasin - as several other tracks on Liquid Swordz do. Featuring Old Dirty on the chorus and Wu members Masta Killa and inspectah Deck, this is some real hip hop shit, check it out:

It's been quite a while since the last post in the sampled by who?? series, so I thought I'd better pull my finger out and get back on it. So while I was playing in the newly opened Avenue the other day I dropped this little jam by Art Farmer and instantly recognized the hook from a classic Kool G Rap tune and seeing as I had that in mind it made perfect sense to stick it online!
Also as a commemoration to Arthur Stewart Farmer who passed away ten years ago today on the 4th October 1999 affter a decent innings of 71 years.
He was a skilled player of the trumpet, flugelhorn and crossbreed of the two flumpet (designed especially for him by David Monette). This cut comes from his album "Gentle Eyes" from back in 1972 and is a lovely slice of laid back funk groove, involving 5 seperate horn players and numerous soloists. Check It.

Art Farmer - Soulsides

The scroll forward 23 years to NYC in 1995, and Kool G Rap, the emcees MC, along with producer T Ray dropped this cut on is seminal 4,5,6 LP. Mr G Rap is widely acknowledged as one of the finest story telling MC's ever to grace the studio (check out his epic three part tune 'Thug Love Story - pts1, 2 & 3' if you don't believe me!) He's still about today, mainly dropping raw guest versus on people's shit so get checking him out...

RIP Roc Raida

Sad news today as it has been officially announced that legendary deejay and Hiphop ambassador Roc Raida has passed away at the age of 37. Details on how and why are scarce on the net at the minute, but it appears to be down to complications arising from surgery on his spine. I first came across his DJ sets after watching the 95 DMC's on videotape and being astounded by his repetoire of cuts and the manner in which he delivered them, a true Grandmaster! I've been out a found a few cheeky links for some of his sets and releases etc for y'all to catch up on, and maybe remember him by. Also make sure you check out the Xecutioners LP Built From Scratch!!

What a day yesterday was!

West Ham 1 - 2 Spurs and perhaps slightly more importantly the England cricketers finally drubbed the lacklustre Australians to regain the Ashes. I haven't been to a cricket match since 2003 and I would have sorely liked to be at the Oval to witness this. Flintoff signed off his Test Match career in fine style and he'll leave a massive gap which will need filling by the selectors and Strauss and Trott did some fine work with the bat yesterday too. Hats off to all the England team, they played well throughout the final test and thoroughly deserved the win!

I picked this tune for Roy Ayers' first outing in the sampled by series due to the sun peeking out today in whats been an erratic summer so far here in the UK. Hopefully the smooth soulful groove will entice it out a few more times. Anyway Roy Ayers is a bit of a legendary Jazz musician from LA who started young and went onto release numerous albums and soundtrack various movies. This came out in 1976 on the LP of the same name and I'm sure will be familiar...

This guy is ridiculous on the ones and twos and has laid down some serious sets which are well worth checking out. This is taken from his new LP 'No Sell Out', he produced all the tracks and has a plethora of heavyweight mc's dropping bars for him. Gigs this Weekend!

Got a bunch more Gigs lined up for the lucky people of Newbury this weekend!

The festivities kick off on Friday night at 9pm in the Canal Bar where I'll be supplying a variety of minty fresh beats until midnight. Expect to hear lots of random tunes, the odd eighties smash hit and the Imperial March off the Star Wars soundtrack!

On Saturday I've lined up a little birthday bash in the Bricklayers for my man, DJ Stasha. We're gonna be coming from a slightly different angle for this one, setting up somewhere in the region of 5 decks with the DJ's doing 2 hour sets, so expect things to get ridiculous!
Thump promotions have kindly agreed to provide the breakbeats out in the Smoking Area, so there will be a flavour of music for virtually all tastes going on at some point throughout the evening. The curtain goes up at 8pm with final act finishing at 2am. Gonna be sickness!

And finally on Sunday, the Drum an Bass will be going down as it does every week. For one week only we'll be switching venue's to the Pig and Paper as the Critical State crew have drafted us in a for a rerun of the Bank Holiday mashup they held down there. We'll be back to normal - running it red in the Tap next week....

Barcelona 2009

So I literally just got back from Barcelona 5 minutes ago, where I've been having it since Friday. We left Newbury at around midday and made it out there with the minimum of fuss, arriving at the hotel (which was plush-as-fuck!) around 9:30pm local time. Wasn't long before we were on road hitting a restaurant and then the bars and eventually ending up at a mental beach party in the early hours of Saturday morning. The debauchery continued throughout Saturday and Sunday only ending a few hours before 6:30am (5:30am GMT) when we had to rock back to the airport and return to normality... Barcelona is a banging city, I've been to a few spots in Espagnol in the past and Barca is definitely the best one by a fair distance, Go There Now! The people were all cool as fuck, the women are all Hot! and the weather was perfect making for a badass weekend all round. I missed so much sleep and am already back at work suffering, ugghhh, gonna sleep well tonite ya knowz.

It's been a long time since I've posted any new Hip Hop up on the blog, mostly due to the fact that wicked tunes seem to be quite thin on the ground in '09. With most of our American cousins concentrating on Auto Tuning their vocals to death rather than generating a sick flow over a phat beat.

However I've got a couple of bits I like today, so without further ado here they are:

First up is Ghostface Killah, apparantly his shows in the UK this year were pretty average so I'm glad I got a chance to check him last year when he (and the Wu) rolled through the country! This is somewhat typical for Ghost but I like it:

Coming straight out JA this cut see's Dancehall veteran Shaggy (Oh Carolina!) in reflective mood over a lush soul backing. I'm fairly sure the sample is from The Delfonics as I reckon Ghostface also made use of it on his Fishscale LP, will check over the weekend and maybe even do a sampled by?? post... Big Tune!

Gordon Brown, the democratically unelected Prime Minister of the UK once again failed to do the right thing last night and is still in a job. How he thinks he has any support is a complete mystery to me and even said:
"No doubt I have much to learn about a collective way of leading the party and the government. I have to learn how to be a full-time prime minister and a full-time leader of the Labour party."
in his speech to Labour MPs last night as a reason to keep his job....

I'm sorry Mr Brown - you've had plenty of time sitting atop Westminster to learn what's right and wrong, so stop exercising a mandate you have no right to exercise and kindly leave office now.

If he had any sense of right and wrong he would have called for a General Election soon after Blair's exit in order to gain approval of his promotion to the top office from the electorate. However it seems very much to me that his fear of losing and the resulting castigation into the political wilderness puts him off letting the public choose.

So is this a democracy? Cos it doesn't taste like one to me.

Mr Brown, do the please honourable thing for once in your career and either step aside or put your popularity and policies to the test and call an election.

Well here we are back with Lonnie Liston Smith for his second outing in the 'sampled' by series. This is the title track of the 1974 LP that also contained the tune 'Shadows' that has already been posted about on this ere blog, and is another laid back, sun-drenched smokers anthem with Mr Smith caressing those keys. This dropped back in '88 when half you motherfuckers were still in nappies no doubt, I was 9 years old by then and was rocking the cub scout scene hard, helping grannies across mad roads an shit. Anyway Stetsasonic had been around for several years before dropping the 'In Full Gear' LP that this tune can be found on, only releasing one LP beforehand in '86 to lukewarm reception. However they were a seminal hiphop group and draw high praise from those in the know and scenesters around at the time due to their farsighted production techniques and unique (at the time) method of layering the elements of their tracks together. Also acting as the forerunners in the alternative hip hop scene that spawned groups like A Tribe Called Quest and De La Soul. This tuen is no doubt my favourite Stetsasonic joint, and is absoloutly Timeless which I think is as much down to the sample as it is the rest of the track..

Hello again, right straight into this one. Lifted from Ronnie Foster's début LP 'The Two Headed Freap' released on Blue Note Records this track is an absolute gem. The perfect soundtrack for a lazy Saturday afternoon chilling in the sun, its no wonder that Q Tip lifted the sample... Ronnie Foster was on the organ for this cut and the entire LP was recorded over the space of 2 days back in '72.

Then came Q Tip, ripping the beat (a 3 bar loop) and layering over the smooth sounds of Mystic Brew to create this laidback 90's Hip Hop classic. Released as the second single from their highly acclaimed 'Midnight Marauders' LP in '93 this is a monster groove, always guaranteed to get your head nodding.

A Tribe Called Quest - Electric Relaxation

So there's not allot else you can do with that after hearing the Tribe Called Quest version. Mykestro released a version a couple of years ago, but the beat and feel of the piece is practically identical to Electric Relaxation, and Marco Polo, one of the emerging hip hop producers of the last couple of years, also used the sample on this tune, called Relax (in a blatant nod to ATCQ) which was the Bonus track on his debut LP 'Port Authority' featuring J. Davey on the vocals. Check out that album if you get the chance he's got some good guests on there like Large Pro, OC, Masta Ace, Buckshot & Kardinal Offishal and all the tunes are pretty dope. Werd.

Pretty sure this is still available on vinyl and it's on that Hidden Darts complilation as well...

What a weekend!!

So then, it was a busy weekend for the Newbury based promoters and punters alike with an unprecedented amount of partying going down over the weekend in town. On Saturday night there was no less than three parties going on across the Canal Bar (which was the best ;P ), The Beach party in the Bricklayers and the Hardcore night in the Berkshire Arms.

Let's start with Friday night when I headed over to the Purple Turtle in Reading, with the lads from work. DJ Lokki was up first but I had to go to a birthday party in the evening so I completely missed his set, he said it was cool though so I'm sure it was all good. Me an Magma rocked up in the club at about midnight just when Basement Phil was finishing off his set, he played some wicked old bits mostly from his label Basement Records and I wish I had got their a bit earlier to catch more of it, but being the slave to public transport that I am means this kind of thing is a regular occurrence (i.e. being late and missing good stuff...). Next up was Bongo Odyssey spinning a bit of deeper dnb and moving things on a bit. He played some nice tunes, a few of which I was planning on drawing too which made him chuckle when i berated him for it - also watch out Newbury crew as he will be coming to do a set in the Canal Bar next Bank Holiday weekend. The crowd were loving it by this point and Mc Macular had also arrived to bolster the line up with some rapid fire lyrics. Soon come 2am an Magma alongside myself stepped up for a two hour back to back set, which was duly despatched in a hail of beats and blanket of bass wobble by the pair of us. Shouts to all who came along a represented, especially Wong Snoozle (or MC Sleepy as he may well be known) and Mayla the crazy French chick! Big up the Subfactory guys: Neil Mac and Greenfly for getting that all hooked up for us!

So onto Saturday, I got home at just after 5am on Friday night / Saturday morning and decided to smoke some weed while watching some new South Park episodes, ended up being proper daytime by the time I went to bed, which seemed to work as a perfect catalyst to encourage people to phone me up, and from 11am onwards my mobile was ringing hot, which was punctuating my mornings kippage so I wasn't too pleased. After advising people on numerous issues from Reading Beer Festival hints an tips right through to PC support, I eventually got out of bed at about half one and had to hurry to get ready for my set in the Bricklayers at 2pm. I made it on time with a fresh bag of vinyl, only to find I had to wait for Man-spanking-Utd to finish their ponceball match with Boro'. This meant my set got cut down from an hour to like 20 minutes, Pri was on next though and he just let me play on which I thought was cool of him so I ended up doin like 40 minutes worth of Funk and Soul to a virtually empty pub, the cats out by the bus stop outside were groovin on down though so I made at lest one old lady happy! Like I say Pri jumped on the decks when I bailed, and turned up the pressure a notch with his blend of hard house and psy-trance. Ratzi and Scriv were living up to their eighties Fun House ideology decked out in retina burning dayglo colours with Scriv even rocking the Reebok Pumps (fluorescent ones at that!). I had to jump ship shortly after finishing my set as I had to go sort out a few things for the Canal bar later that evening. Duly sorted I rocked back to the Brickies and was stunned to hear of Craig Marshall's tragic death the night before, which definitely cast a shadow over the remaining events of the day. Sincere condolences to Craig's family and girlfriend for their loss, may he rest in peace.
Despite the awful news the party went on, and I caught the last part of Library Boy's set as well as most of Phil Rumens breakz abuse and the first chunk of Jambo's arrival on the decks (he started with that Skream remix of La Roux and had everyone bopping from the off). Time was relentlessly passing an I had to get my next bag of tunes and set up shop in the Canal Bar, which was pretty busy before I even got started. I chucked on some souled out numbers to begin with including a few cuts off the supremely dope El Michels 'Enter the 37th Chamber' LP I picked up earlier in the week, before making a foray into a spot of old skool hip hop. DJ Stasha bowled in at about 10pm, took the vibe, rolled it up into fattie and lit it up for the rest of us, so before his first tune was over there was a bevy of heads skanking away. Shout outs to the girl dancing in the full on chicken suit, and Meera who was not afraid of showing people how to do a Proper forward roll - I promise I'll wheel one out next time! Stasha kept up the pressure for almost two hours before I jumped back on an finished the do off with some Jungle-ism which pleased some people but seemed to annoy the Hockey crew, who came an asked me to play eighties tunes instead... It's like me going along to one of their Hockey matches and asking them if the can play cricket cos Hockey bores the shit outta me... Always riles me when randoms do that, I simply don't understand it. Anyway so that went down I shut up shop and legged it back to the Bricklayers to catch the last set of the evening, my man SUP, who played a watered down version of his usual hard drum andbass sound but definately kept the vibe alive. I had time for a couple of beers then it was all over and I found myself back home, watching more south park episodes at 5am in the Morning! A Good Day all round except for the shit news we had heard, big up Mikey Deviant, Phill 3 Parts, Ratzi, Scriv, Stasha and all the other people I saw around or hung out with.
Sunday was now upon us and I was knackered so after spending most of the day in bed an checking out the football scores from Saturday (Spurs are gonna get into Europe!!) I dragged my ass down to the Tap for a spot of the drum and bass thing. DJ Skipa fresh from his set in the Brickies on Saturday night popped in a done a tight jump up flavoured blend to get our collective heads nodding before young Jobee stepped up and dropped a heavy set on us. He's still a bit rough round the edges but generally it was a good little mix bar the odd dropped beat here an there but he wasn't afraid to drop tunes in and marks another step in the right direction for the youngster. Next up came Magma ready to smash the place up with his trademark filthy jump up beats which were duly delivered exquisitly. The barmaid kept turning the lights on and off by this point which was sending everyone mental, after sitting around in the dark for about an hour, quite amusing. Then when Magma had done his thing I jumped on with a spot of Jungle (I bought my record box straight from the Canal bar so was armed with some serious tunes as well as the usual Dnb fare) and rolled that for about twenty minutes before upping the bpm with 'On The Run' by Shy FX and getting dirty from there in. All round I was pleased, an it was another big night - props to the dancing crew who were having it all night as well as Skipa for sorting the CDJ's and the MC's Rush n Smoothie for their chitter chatter.
Needless to say I done fuck all on Monday except watch shit on telly and do a massive pile of washing up - true R'n'R!

After MONTHS of patient waiting my Doom LP has finally arrived. The cover is fucking heavy with a embossed green and silver motif on the back and all the hieroglyphs on the stone tablet are also embossed so this looks and feels like a classy number.

They also sent me a nice Doom cut out n keep face mask. Sweet!

Sampled By Who?? Incredible Bongo Band vs Hip Hop

The year is 1960, the month is July and the Shadows - who were probably most famous for their work as Cliff Richards backing band, were enjoying a 5 week stint at the top of the hit parade courtesy of a Jerry Lordon written number inspired by the 1954 western "Apache". The song re-appeared numerous times over the next ten years before The Incredible Bongo Band bought their funk fuelled bongo driven break monster to the table. Micheal Viner the MGM exec is widely credited with putting the Incredible Bongo Band project together, using the MGM studios when they weren't booked up and utilising any musicians (who were never credited) passing through the MGM offices to record the tracks. Rumour has it that one or two tracks from the 1973 debut album included Ringo Starr thumping the tubs and many other notables also appeared on other tracks across the 2 LPs they released.

Incredible Bongo Band - Apache

This tune was first released on the 1973 Bongo Rock LP although it was until much later in the decade when pioneers like DJ Kool Herc and of course Grandmaster Flash backspinning two copies of this tune plucked it from obscurity and showcased the break for the B Boys. He done this live on two 2 x turntables and a mixer:

And then Salaam Remi produced this banger for Nas' 6th studio LP in 2003. Also released as the first single this tune is simply badness and marked a return to form for Mr Jones after a steady decline in the intensity of his work after he dropped the classic mid nineties joint 'Illmatic'

Ike Turner was a player in the music industry for many years before releasing his first proper solo LP 'A Black Man's Soul' (backed up by his long time band The Kings Of Rhythm), working his way up from humble beginnings aged just 8 years old. This was released back in 1969 as an all instrumental project and was squeezed in between the stuff he and Tina were doing at the time, but it's still chunked out with classy funk cuts. Getting Nasty is probably the pick of these, according to sample count anyway, and you will recognize it straight away - a piano groove led slice of raw funk! The pressing sounds a bit curious apparantly cos it was 'electronically reprocessed for stereo using the original monographic recordings.', but also it's the last track on side A so those levels are getting crunched anyway.

Released back in 1972, this was written by Willie G. Hale and produced by Steve Alaimo and Willie Clark. The singer on this version is Robert Moore I believe. Fucking Bad Tune!

Most of you will probably remember this tune from the Austin Powers soundtrack where Burt Bacharach plays it on a piano mounted on some kind of horse drawn get-up, and thats very fitting as Bacharach originally penned the music. Some guy called Hal David wrote the lyrics sometime after and they stuck like glue. Originally recorded by Dusty Springfield for the Casino Royale soundtrack in 1967, this song has since been covered by virtually everybody who has lived since.
Let's vote for scientology and concentrate on the late Isaac Hayes' version though. It appeared on the 2nd album he released in 1970 'To Be Continued...' which featured very long drawn out compositions typical of his syle at the time. This tune has been sampled by a few people like Jay Z and the Lost Boys but the sample you're looking out for is around 9 Minutes in!

Produced by Evil Dee, one half of NYC's Da Beatminerz this is probably my favourite track from this heavyweight debut LP 'Dah Shinin' from Tek an Steele aka Smif n Wessun aka Cocoa Brovaz. Dropping to high praise from critics and heads on the street back in 1995, this is a little slice of hiphop being done to perfection. The wistful horns perfectly compliment the theme and delivery Tek and Steele lay down creating a brooding but not quite moody sorta atmosphere. The rest of the LP is laced with pure hip hop badness as well with such tracks as 'Bucktown', 'Wontime' and 'Sound Bwoy Buriel' if you haven't already, go Check It Out:
